Fallout TV Series Season 1: Latest News, Release Date, and More

It's gonna be a beautiful day in the apocalypse

Rebecca Rovenstine

Put down the controller and pop open the Nuka-Cola, because the beloved Bethesda video game, Fallout, is now being reimagined as a streaming TV series. Following the success of HBO's The Last of Us, another post-apocalyptic video game-turned-television show, Prime Video has big things in store for Fallout. With Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the creators of Westworld, on board to executive produce, we can hardly wait to see what's in store for the upcoming Fallout series on Amazon.

We know you have questions, whether you're a lifelong fan of the video game, or just love a good dystopian series, so we will do our best to answer your questions like, when does Fallout premiere, who will be in the first season of Fallout, and what you can expect to see happen in the show.

Fallout latest news

Fallout will now be released on April 10 at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, up a day from its previously scheduled release date of April 11, which was up a day from its original release date of April 12.

Fallout Season 1 release date

The Fallout TV series will premiere on April 10 at 9 p.m. ET with all eight episodes dropping at once. It was previously scheduled to come out on April 11 (and before that, April 12), but a new ad that aired in early April revealed that we'll be getting it a day early. No complaints here!

Fallout trailer

On March 7, Prime Video unleashed the full trailer for Fallout, and it's a feast for the eyes. Clocking in at over three minutes, it's our deepest look at the series yet, diving into the story and characters more than the first teaser trailer did. And of course, it has more Dogmeat (assuming that Belgian Malinois IS Dogmeat).

In December, the first teaser trailer was released, showing off the show's quirky tone and mood by alternating between comedy, the perilous post-apocalyptic landscape, and flashbacks to when the bombs dropped.

Back in October, Prime Video made the release date announcement online using a mock of the games' infamous Pip-Boy wearable computer.

Prime Video previously released a short video on its YouTube page, which includes interviews with the creatives behind the original Fallout video games.

In the video, the art director of Bethesda Game Studios, Istvan Pely, says, "So I've actually been blown away by how much they've stuck with our original visions and designs on the visual side of our world building in the games — directly translating that to the screen, it's sort of reassuring that we got it right the first time."

What will Fallout be about?

There has been limited information about what to expect in the Fallout series. It appears Fallout will feature three main characters: Ella Purnell's Lucy, a young woman who leaves Vault 33 to explore the decimated surface; Walton Goggins' The Ghoul, a former movie star who was mutated in the nuclear blasts; and Aaron Moten's Maximus, a new enlistee in the Brotherhood of Steel, an organization that serves as the de facto police above the surface. As for the setting, it will be set in Los Angeles and take place in 2296, which is after any of the games — Fallout 4 took place in 2287.

That said, the Fallout TV series will be a canonical entry in the Fallout universe, with co-creator Jonathan Nolan telling Total Film that the show is "almost Fallout 5" in function. That canon status means that everything that has ever happened in any of the games can be a part of this series' backstory — and several of the games have taken place in or near California, including both of the first two games and New Vegas. New Vegas is the closest on the timeline among those, since it took place in 2280. You shouldn't expect any direct story connections to any of the games, but it'd be surprising if there weren't Easter eggs.

What is Fallout, and what is the universe's timeline?

Why tell you when we can show you? Our sister site Fandom put together this very handy video explaining Fallout's complete timeline, and showing how the Fallout story gets to the period in time when Prime Video's TV series takes place.

Who will be in Fallout?

Along with Walton Goggins, Ella Purnell from Yellowjackets and Aaron Moten from Disjointed lead the cast of Fallout Season 1. Other cast members include Twin Peaks' Kyle MacLachlan and Xelia Mendes-Jones from The Wheel of Time.

Fallout Season 1 review

In his review of Prime Video's Fallout TV series, Ben Rosenstock praises the show for bringing the quirky, dangerous, and unique post-apocalyptic setting to life, but questions some of the casting choices. Still, the pros outweigh the cons here, and it comes recommended.

Where can I watch Fallout?

The Fallout TV series is a Prime Video original, so it will exclusively stream on Amazon's streaming service when it premieres.
