The 96th Oscars: When Are the Academy Awards, Nominees, Host, and Everything to Know

PREVIOUS: Can Barbie fend off the atomic might of Oppenheimer to win a dream house full of Oscars? The summer box office matchup of the century is going to Round 2 at the 2024 Academy Awards, where both films will face off for Best Picture. On the Barbie side, actors Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera are also up for awards this year, alongside Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach for writing, Jacqueline Durran for costume design, Billie Eilish for the original song "What Was I Made For?", and more. On the Oppenheimer side, actors Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and Emily Blunt are nominated, as are Christopher Nolan for writing and directing, Ludwig Göransson for original score, Hoyte van Hoytema for cinematography, Ellen Mirojnick for costume design, and more.

But while the "Barbeheimer" double feature electrified audiences last summer, there are plenty of other movies vying for this year's Oscars, including Bradley Cooper's Maestro, Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon, Yorgos Lanthimos' Poor Things, and Celine Song's Past Lives.

Here's everything you need to know about the 96th Academy Awards, including when the ceremony will air, who's nominated, and who will be hosting and presenting.

When are the Oscars?

The 96th Academy Awards (or the Oscars) will air live Sunday, March 10, 2024 on ABC. ABC has been the broadcast home of the Oscars since 1976, when it took the broadcast over from NBC. In a surprising change to tradition, the Oscars will now air one hour earlier than usual, at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. The official pre-show on the red carpet will air starting at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT. This is, in part, to accommodate a new episode of Abbott Elementary, which will air immediately following the show. 

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science has announced Raj Kapoor as executive producer and showrunner, Katy Mullan as executive producer, and Hamish Hamilton as the director of the ceremony.

Who are this year's Oscar nominees?

Anything can happen, but after Oppenheimer's dominant showing at the Golden Globes, Critics' Choice Awards, BAFTA Awards, and SAG Awards, it looks like this year's Best Picture Oscar is Oppenheimer's to lose. Star Cillian Murphy is also the frontrunner for Best Actor. 

One of the big questions of the night is whether Lily Gladstone, who won at the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards, will take home Best Actress for her performance in Killers of the Flower Moon, or whether the award will go to Poor Things' Emma Stone, who won the Critics' Choice Award and the BAFTA. Gladstone has already made history this year as the first Native American woman and fourth Indigenous actress to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress. Stone previously won the award for her work in La La Land.

Who is hosting and presenting at the Academy Awards?

Returning for his fourth time hosting the Oscars will be Jimmy Kimmel, who hosted the ceremony last year and previously did a two-year hosting stint in 2017 and 2018. In many ways, Kimmel was baptized with fire in his Oscars hosting debut in 2017, which was the ceremony that ended with the notorious Moonlight and La La Land mixup in announcing Best Picture.

Kimmel's return comes after a turbulent few years in the hosting arena. For three years between 2019 and 2021, the Oscars went on with a host-free ceremony. Then in 2022, the Academy tried out a three-host structure with Regina Hall, Amy Schumer, and Wanda Sykes sharing the job, to mixed results. With Hollywood still getting back into the swing of things after last summer's writers and actors strikes, Kimmel represents a safe choice; the question is whether Kimmel will address the strikes at this year's ceremony.

Presenters at this year's Academy Awards will include Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Zendaya, Al Pacino, Jamie Lee Curtis, Matthew McConaughey, Mahershala Ali, Nicolas Cage, Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Regina King, Rita Moreno, Ramy Youssef, Emily Blunt, Ryan Gosling, Sally Field, Ariana Grande, and Steven Spielberg. The Oscars voting and nomination timeline

All the films eligible for Oscars at the 96th Academy Awards had to be released by Dec. 31, 2023, in accordance with the Academy's theatrical guidelines. 

The voting period for nominees took place from Jan. 11-16, 2024, with the official nominations announced on Jan. 23. Voting on the winners began on Feb. 22 and ended Feb. 27.

The 96th Academy Awards will air live Sunday, March 10 at 7 p.m. ET on ABC.
